AN!Tools :: Filesystems :: Sectors |
A sector is smallest contiguous unit of space on a storage medium. Each sector has an address, and when a file is saved to it, the overlying file system will keep a list of what sectors are used in what blocks (collection of sectors), and what blocks contain the various bits of a file.
On hard drives, the most common sector size is 512 bytes. A file system's Block size will always be a multiple of the sector size.
